Going Big with Kemano T2
6 Point Engineering is excited to share our recent successes in the field of avalanche engineering and protection with our completion of Canada’s largest remote avalanche system (Gazex) install to date.
Risk assessment, avalanche deflection berms, 11 Gazex installations, and building/operating an avalanche control program from the ground up.

Rio Tinto Kemano
T2 Project
LOCATION: Kitimat, BC
KEY ROLE: Avalanche Risk Assessment and mitigation design
Rio Tinto is completing a second tunnel ensuring water supply to their Kemano hydroelectric facility remains reliable. Avalanches are one of the Project’s primary risks.
6 Point Engineering performed avalanche risk assessments during the pre-feasibility and feasibility planning phases and performed engineering designs of large avalanche defense structures and an 11 exploder Gazex remote avalanche control system.
Since the spring of 2018, we are the Project’s avalanche control contractor employing up to 10 avalanche technicians.
As of 2019, we have performed over 20,000 hours of lost time injury-free work on the Project.
Ninco Construction
LOCATION: Mnt. Bosworth, Yoho National Park, Canada
KEY ROLE: Project Avalanche Engineer. System design of 6 Gazex exploders. Foundation design for Gazex.
Avalanches from Mt. Bosworth cause significant risk to the Trans-Canada Highway. Remote Avalanche Control Systems (Gazex) were selected to enhance avalanche control helping to make the highway safer. 6 Point Engineering provided complete engineering services including geotechnical and civil design for Ninco Construction’s installation of 6 Gazex Exploders.
Pretium Resources Brucejack Mine
LOCATION: Stewart, BC
KEY ROLE: Engineer of Record
Pretium’s Brucejack Gold Mine has significant avalanche risk on its access road. Gazex were selected to enhance the Mine’s avalanche control program. The Project included challenges due to poor rock and difficult soils. 6 Point Engineering provided engineering services for locating exploder locations foundation designs and fall protection.
3 Valley Gap
LOCATION: Revelstoke, BC
KEY ROLE: Avalanche Engineer. Remote avalanche control system evaluation and recommendation for 9 unit installation of RACS system
Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure – Three Valley Gap just west of Revelstoke, BC presents serious avalanche risk to the Trans-Canada Highway. The site is unique due to the highway alignment running between a lake and cliff. 6 Point Engineering performed a Remote Avalanche Control System evaluation that leads the Ministry to perform a RACS installation the following year. The MoTI has since seen a reduction in highway closure times.
